Week 3-4 reminders

Posted in Homework, Tech Exercises on January 27, 2009 by emjaydaniel

Hello Time Base 2,

If you have a portable USB or firewire drive (4 gigs or more), please bring it to next class–so that you can transfer files you will need for Technical Exercise 2.

Homework:

1) Finish Technical Exercise 1, and be prepared to show it at start of class.

2) Journal Exercise 3: sound evokes an image etc.

3) Readings: Handouts on sound & image dynamics, and sound design. Be prepared to discuss Bresson, Notes on Sound, and Metz, The Aural Object in class.

4) Project One: Select 3 text fragments (no more than 15 words each) from your own journal writings that you think might work as sources of inspiration for Creative Project One:
–1 you think is interesting/has lots of potential
–1 you’re not sure about
–1 you think is probably too lame.

See you Friday,

Mary

Journal Exercise 3: sound/image

Posted in Homework, Journal Exercises on January 27, 2009 by emjaydaniel

As you go about your daily life, find and  note of the following:

  • a sound that evokes an image
  • an image that evokes a sound
  • a sound that provokes a feeling
  • a sound that provokes a thought

Were some easier to find than others? Which were the easiest? Which the hardest? Thoughts on why?

Bring your notes, answers, and thoughts to next class for discussion, and/or post them on your blog. If you get totally stuck bring some thoughts on why some were so hard to find.

’3 moments’ revisited

Posted in Homework, Journal Exercises on January 20, 2009 by emjaydaniel

JOURNAL EXERCISE 1 B: ‘3 MOMENTS’ REVISITED.

Either:
Take the 3 moments you found and describe them again. This time:
- Restrict your descriptions to sight and sound only (no smells, feelings, thoughts, explanations).
- Write only in the present tense (not the past or future tenses). Describe what you/we see happening, as if you/we are seeing it happening now—even if it is something you are remembering. For example, ‘a worm inches across a leaf’ (present tense) not ‘a worm inched across a leaf’ (past tense) or ‘a worm will inch across a leaf’ (future tense).
- Avoid the ‘ing’ form of verbs (‘is inching’), if possible.
- Use as few words as possible: only what you need to give us an image, ideally 1-3 sentences per ‘moment’.

Or: Do the exercise again, starting over from scratch, and following the above guidelines. This time find your moments by spending 20-30 minutes walking and/or looking around, paying attention to what you see and hear.
